Perseverance–Press On
In Paul’s writings to the people of the city of Corinth, he emphasizes perseverance. In Corinthians 3:13-14 Paul writes: “I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to achieve the goal of the highest calling of the heavenly prize through Christ Jesus.”
First, Paul, like all of us, acknowledges that he has not yet accomplished his goal, and yet, he is determined to persevere. He advises forgetting past failures and instead looking forward. To persevere is to press on forward in the midst of difficulty. Paul then shifts his mind to the goal of the highest calling, which we can interpret as an even more challenging goal. Paul speaks to his faith as his strength, and his belief that he will achieve the goal. This is a significant “reset” of the mind. We can learn from Paul’s coaching points.
What do we learn? To persevere, we must acknowledge past challenges, choose to press on, and focus on the highest calling in achieving an even more significant goal. Change your attitude and keep on keeping on!
Action Steps:
- Forget your past failures.
- Focus on the path moving forward to achieve your goal.
- Use your faith and past experiences as a strength in pressing on.
- Believe that you will succeed.
