Perseverance is defined as: continued effort to do or accomplish something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition.
In the game of life, most of us encounter frequent challenges–whether it be pursuing an education, raising a family, health related issues, or pursuing a goal within our scope of career or work. In this regard, and at that those points, we must decide–press on or quit. It is always easier to quit, but seldom the best option!
On of my favorite personal sayings that I included in my book “Winning Words–Speaking Life to Influence Others,” is this: “Life is half passion and half perseverance. We need both.” Passion gives us the drive and energy to get us moving towards a goal, but perseverance allows us to keep going and overcome the difficulties that get in the way of reaching the goal. In too many cases, people quit before they reach the goal, because they lack the personal resolve to keep on keeping on.
Perseverance also gives us opportunity to be motivated because they witness how the one who persevered overcame a challenge and pressed forward towards the goal. Personal testimony is a powerful lesson to others. Who can learn from your perseverance?
Thomas Edison once said, “Our greatness weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is to always try just one more time.”
Action Steps:
1) Be prepared for the difficulty that will present itself.
2) Remind yourself of past wins and forget past losses.
3) Pray for uncommon strength and resolve–God will help you.
4) Celebrate with other people the accomplishment of the goal.
