Leaders Are at Their Best During Tough Times
Perseverance is that profound ability to press forward during times of difficulty. Some do this better than others. This is true of leaders as well. Leaders establish themselves, not during the easy times, but during times of challenge and sometimes, extreme difficulty.
Three coaching points related to leading in tough times:
- The tough call demands risk. There is no guarantee and perseverance requires that a leader assume the risk in making the right decision. This is not easy but is imperative.
- The tough call begins with a leader’s inward battle. To persevere, the leader must wrestle with his or her own feelings and mixed emotions, while continuing to focus on the tough decision that must be made. Anyone can lead during easy times, but tough calls are effectively made by leaders who trust their faith and instinct.
- The tough call during times where perseverance is required will distinguish the leader. Rudy Guliani once said, “When the right person is the leader, he does even better during tough times.“
In life, we will all encounter challenges. How we perform during the tough times will make an impact–press on and persevere! You can do it.
Action Steps:
1) Anticipate that the tough times will come.
2) Be ready to make the difficult decisions.
3) Move forward in faith that you made the right decision.
