Encouragement–You Can Give It Away
Several years ago my wife gave me a book for Father’s Day. The title of the book is “The Gift of Years” and is written by Joan Chittister. The theme of the author’s writing is that as we gain in years, we also gain in wisdom, insight, perspective, and relationships. All of these are a gift–the gift of life experience. The young and middle-aged do not have these gifts yet. The more mature, including myself, have this gift, because we have gained much in life experience. The key point of her writing however is, “give the gift away.” Give unto others what has been given to us.
Encouragement is very much the same. We all need to be encouraged from time to time in our lives. We all can give the gift of encouragement to others. On any given day, any person that you bump into may need a lift, a smile, an acknowledgement, ten minutes of your time, and some words of encouragement.
Like the gift of years, the gift of encouraging smiles, phone calls, conversations, written notes of affirmation, and speaking life to others are all meant to be given away. You can be the one giving the gift of encouragement!
Action Step – In the Next Three Days:
1) Read I Thessalonians 5:11
2) Write three notes of encouragement to people that you feel need a lift
3) Make three phone calls to encourage three people that you feel need a lift
4) Catch yourself saying encouraging words to people within your home.
You will feel better about yourself three days later!
